The Global Remote Internship Program enables students to secure a virtual internship with an international company or organization. As part of this experience, students will gain valuable work experience and remote professional networking – while learning how to communicate and operate in an international context.  In a world becoming more reliant on connecting, collaborating and performing virtually, remote internships will enable and empower students to develop skills today that will prepare them for employers’ needs of tomorrow.

The College of Arts & Letters partners with internship provider organizations who identify customized internship placements for each student in industries such as:

Advertising & Public Relations | Business | Communications | Data Analytics | Entrepreneurship & Startups | Fashion | Fundraising & Philanthropy | Game Design & Development | Graphic Design | Human Resources | Human Rights | International Development | IT & Computer Systems | Journalism | Marketing & Social Media | Publishing & Editing | Video Editing & Animation | Web Design

Participants will be placed in internships with international companies and organizations who are based in locations including:
Argentina | Australia | China | France | Ireland | Italy | Japan | South Africa | South Korea | Spain | United Kingdom | Vietnam

Internship Hours & Dates: Summer 2024: June 3 – August 2; 15-20 hours per week. All internship placements are unpaid.

Application Deadline:  March 20.

Eligibility & Requirements:  Major in College of Arts & Letters required; 2.5 minimum GPA required, 3.0 minimum GPA preferred; Minimum of junior (or rising junior) class standing required by the program start date; Previous professional experience preferred.

For students interested in placements with a foreign language component, there is a minimum requirement of 2 semesters (or equivalent) of Italian, 4 semesters (or equivalent) of Spanish, French, Korean, or Chinese, and 6 semesters (or equivalent) of Japanese.

Must be a self-starter with strong time management skills; Must have a reliable computer and Wi-fi connection for meetings via Zoom and other interactive platforms; Specific software and digital storage space may be required for particular placements. 

Academics:  Students are required to enroll in AL 493A Arts & Letters Internship course for a minimum of 3 credits; If you are seeking credit from James Madison College or College of Social Science, you must apply through the respective college. Students seeking MC credit should email Max Olivero at oliverom@msu.edu. Program Costs: There is a $500 program fee to participate in this program. If that will cause financial hardship, please reach out for resources.
Students are also responsible for tuition costs for the required AL 493A Arts & Letters Internship course (3-credit minimum). The program includes placement services, employer-student facilitation by internship provider, and other professional development opportunities.

  • As part of the application, you will need to submit:
    • Personal Information
    • Current résumé (Prior to applying, we strongly suggest scheduling an appointment with a representative from the College of Arts & Letters via Handshake to prepare your résumé)
    • One-page statement of interest addressing your goals and preparation for the internship experience
  • After applications are reviewed, applicants may be invited to schedule a Zoom conversation with a member of the Excel Network team to discuss your goals and review program details.
  • Students who are accepted will have their names, résumés, and interest statements forwarded to one of our placement partners. Students will then receive information on arranging a conversation with a placement coordinator, with whom you will discuss your background, goals, resume, and possible placement areas.
    • Students are encouraged to be as flexible and open-minded as possible about placements, locations, types of work, and other details.
    • Students are responsible for timely responses and professional interactions with your placement coordinators. Failure to respond or engage will result in your removal from the program.
  • Placement coordinators will work with their networks to determine a placement for a student. No placement will be considered official or finalized until a student has completed an interview and been approved by the host organization. Students should be aware that they may not know their final placement until shortly (+/- 2 weeks) prior to their internship’s start date. Flexibility and open-mindedness are key.
