University Arts and Collections in the Office of the Provost includes the Beal Botanical Garden, the Broad Art Museum, the MSU Museum, and the Wharton Center for Performing Arts. It also coordinates and helps to implement the new MSU Arts Strategy. MSU’s Arts Strategy is guided by the belief that the arts are essential to building a campus community that is adaptable, inclusive, collaborative, globally minded, and transformative. Integrating the arts across MSU’s missions, the Arts Strategy foregrounds the ways that creativity and exploration connect campus and communities to ignite innovation through three pillars: integrating arts into the educational experience, the research endeavor, and campus infrastructure and placemaking.

Job Description

The intern will assist the Associate Provost for University Arts and Collections in planning and implementing student-led initiatives under the campus Arts Strategy. These may include, e.g., Arts 4U, which supports student artists and performers to infuse arts performances and exhibitions around campus and community; a new Student Arts Council; activities related to the STEAMpower Project, a collaboration of artists, researchers, and students around the nexus of arts and sciences. The focus of this internship will be on arts-related activities that reach a broader student and community audience within the setting of a large, research university. It will provide the intern with a broad look at university organization and planning priorities.

Strong project planning skills will be required; past experience in project planning is preferred, but there will be mentoring to help develop this skill. Experience in doing community engagement activities is also preferred.

The intern should have strong organizational skills; be able to work both with a variety of collaborators and independently to plan and implement projects; and have an interest in audience engagement and the public role of the arts. Excellent communication skills are essential to this position. Work schedules can be flexible. Office space will be provided.

Compensation

Interns will receive a $1,000 stipend for 10 weeks of work.
