Job Description:

  • Title:
    • Student Intern – MHAC                                     
    • $15.00 – $17.00 / Posted thru: 6-6-22                                    
    • Limited Term: 6-12 months / Part Time 16-24 hrs. per week. 
  • Location:          
    • Remote/Virtual – Must Be a Michigan Resident 
  • Purpose: 
    • This position is responsible for supporting the mission of the Michigan AIDS HIV Advisory Council which is to represent the diversity of those affected by HIV/AIDS in Michigan, maintain collaboration and coordination among prevention and care issues, and develop and sustain a statewide comprehensive plan(s) for HIV/AIDS prevention and care. MHAC promotes health equity among HIV prevention and care programs. 
  • Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Provide support to the Michigan HIV/AIDS Council (MHAC) full council, its sub-committees and work groups. Requires attendance at full council meetings.
    • Provide support to the MHAC Program Assistant with administrative support during full council and subcommittee meetings including scheduling, meeting notation and communication needs on behalf on MDHHS and Council members.
    • Provide support to community engagement /membership activities and scheduled events.
    • Requires a minimum attendance of 4 community engagement events per calendar year.
    • Support MHAC and its committees in the achievement of specific goals, objectives, and planning activities.
    • Participate in all required meetings and trainings presented to the full council and sub- committees.
    • Participate in quarterly mentorship sessions with Community Planner and the development of an independent project.
    • Other duties as assigned. 
  • Qualifications/Requirements: 
    • Education: 
      • High School diploma or GED required.                   
    • Experience: 
      • This is an entry level position. The ideal candidate will have a desire to educate community members, be open to developing new skillsets and working alongside MHAC members. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention and care options but not necessary. Experience working with public health HIV/STD programs is a bonus but not necessary. The ideal candidate will be familiar and comfortable engaging with people of color, sexual minorities including those of the LGBT community and diverse populations. 
    • Important Skills and Characteristics Characteristics:
      • Commitment to health equity and serving the underserved populations in Michigan. 
      • Should have the ability to work independently while remaining communication with fellow council members.
      • Be able to grow and maintain relationships with the current council and the communities served by the council. 
    • Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
      • Position is currently 100% remote but allows for in person support at community focused events (ie Pride and conferences). Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a VDT screen 30%-50% of the time and responding to phone inquiries.  Standard office environment. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. Local, state and out-of- state travel may be required. 
  • RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility. 
  • IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: Performs as a critical member of a team of professionals working to reduce transmission of HIV and to ensure access to and retention in care for persons in Michigan living with HIV.
