POSITION: Director of Youth Programs

DESCRIPTION:  We are currently seeking an eager and enthusiastic individual who is responsible for managing all youth programs. This position will support educating youth in Detroit about the environment and how to recycle and practice the 3 Rs. The Director of Youth Programs will oversee and develop all programming for youth in schools and through youth partnerships. This position will work closely with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and will maintain relationships with teachers and other partner organizations. The Director will be responsible for executing programs as well as finding resources and funding to support new youth program initiatives. 

​This role requires someone who is passionate about the environment and understands the urgency of climate change. The goal of the youth programs is to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders in Detroit by educating about the issues and inspiring civic action. Youth programming consists of, but is not limited to, field trips, assemblies, in-class lessons, and summer camps.

ABOUT GREEN LIVING SCIENCE:
Founded in 2011, Green Living Science(GLS) is a Detroit based non-profit organization focused on providing sustainability education to students, families and businesses throughout the community. The organization’s mission is to help Detroiters deepen their understanding of their impact and reliance on the natural environment.  GLS has provided Detroit Public Schools environmental programming since 2012 with science based lessons and presentations that align with state standards. Our programming includes working in Schools, Businesses, and the Community. 

​ACTIVITIES + RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Develop and teach GLS lessons and youth programs.
  • Curriculum development.
  • School assembly facilitation.
  • Manage the BEE Green Plastic STEAM Machine mobile youth experience (driving a trailer required).
  • Complete appropriate paperwork and lesson evaluations.
  • Initiate and set goals for programs based on the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Support teachers and administration through lessons creation and professional development.
  • Grant writing and reporting for funding to support programs.
  • Managing and on-boarding contract educators as needed.
  • Volunteer program and event coordinating.
  • Create an engaging and fun environment conducive to learning for all students.
  • Be a positive role model for students and show up for lessons at scheduled time.
  • Exemplify the mission and values of GLS.


SKILLS + EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree, teaching certification preferred, or equivalent in a related field, a driver’s license and mode of transportation.
  • 2-3 years of professional experience working with youth.
  • Responsible and dependable.
  • Strong public speaking and classroom management skills.       
  • Proficiency and comfort using cloud based collaborative software, such as Google Calendar, Google Sheets, Google Docs.
  • Experience with design programs such as Adobe Suites, Canva, etc are preferred.
  • Honor and respect for the community we serve.
  • Demonstrated expertise with building relationships.
  • Passion for spreading awareness of environmental issues through education.

    COMPENSATION  
    This is a full time position with a salary range of $38,000-$45,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. It does not include benefits except for access to 401K if requested, 10 days paid time off, after completing 90 days of employment, in addition to holidays.
