This week­long study away program in Los Angeles takes place over Spring Break. Students will earn 3 credits while focusing on networking and creative career paths in the entertainment and design industry. The goal of the program is to introduce students to the work culture of the industry, create opportunities to forge networks and develop possible career paths, connect them with alumni and friends of the College in the L.A. area, and get a sense of the place and culture of Los Angeles.

Behind the scenes tours and visits will give students an opportunity to see daily work life at places we are visiting, allowing them to ask our alumni specific questions and to participate in professionally productive activities such as pitching project ideas, discussing career trajectories, and portfolio/resume review.

Goals of the program include:

  • Connecting students with MSU alumni in L.A. area
  • Exploring creative jobs and possible careers in the entertainment industry
  • Seeing workspaces and understanding work processes in the industry
  • Gaining an understanding of local culture and space

Application Deadline: December 1, 2018 (applications are now closed). 
Note that applications will not be reviewed until after the Dec 1 deadline. 

Dates: March 2-9, 2019

Eligibility: Students must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 or higher. Preference will be given to College of Arts & Letters majors. 

Course Offerings:  3 credits of AL491: Special Topics in Arts and Letters. The class will meet 3 times prior to departure and 3 times after returning. Class meetings after returning will be determined at a later date. Final projects will be due at the end of Spring Semester.

Housing:  Students will be placed in double occupancy rooms in a hotel or guesthouse.  

Estimated Program Fee: $1,000

Program Fee will include housing in L.A., all breakfasts and at least three group dinners, local transportation to/from all program related events/activities, and excursions. Fee does not include MSU tuition, roundtrip airfare to Los Angeles, some local transportation, books and materials, additional meals, and personal spending money.

Financial Aid should be applicable to the total estimated cost of the program. Tuition costs vary depending on class standing, resident/non-resident status, etc. Visit MSU Student Accounts for information on tuition rates. Students may use Financial Aid for this program.
