Sistrum Herstory
In 1986, a handful of lesbians gathered to sing under Rachel Alexander’s direction. This simple but radical act was the beginning of what became Sistrum, Lansing Women’s Chorus. Under the direction of Dr. Meredith Bowen, and now Megan Eldred-Woolsey, Artistic Director, Sistrum continues to educate, inspire, and entertain others through message and musical excellence.
As a membership-based chorus, Sistrum welcomes all women-identified persons to join its nearly 70 members focusing on issues of social justice, racial justice, inclusion, and feminism as it remains a positive force in the Lansing area now and for years to come. As is stated in our Core Values, we provide an intergenerational, inclusive musical haven where all women can find and nurture their voices and enjoy the camaraderie of the Sistrum community.
It is the policy of Sistrum, Lansing Women’s Chorus, not to discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender/sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, height, weight, or marital status in its work, services or activities.
