What is the IRRC?

The IRRC is a cross-sector network of stakeholders from across Mid-Michigan who are working together to ensure services and programs reach newcomer populations. With that, the IRRC serves as a hub for learning, networking, and working shoulder-to-shoulder with New Americans. In fact, our Advisory Council is made up of leaders who originally came to our community as both refugees and immigrants.

What would I do as an intern?

You would help the IRRC compile and create content for cultural briefings on newly arriving refugee and immigrant populations to Mid-Michigan. These briefings would be offered to non-profit agencies, schools, community and neighborhood centers, and others working to bring resources and programming to our newest Americans.

Specific Job Duties Include

  • Research on the history, politics, and cultures of various newcomer populations to Mid-Michigan
  • Creating presentation and training materials in multiple formats (electronic, in person, video, etc.)
  • Working with local ethnic community groups as well as college and university professors to deliver cultural briefings

When would I start and how long would the internship last?

  • Position starts immediately
  • Hours per week: average of 5 (some weeks could be lighter or heavier)
  • Time Commitment: 6 months –1 year
  • Compensation: this internship comes with a stipend and pay would depend upon length of commitment to the position.

What qualifications must I have?

  • Candidates from newcomer backgrounds who speak another language are preferred
  • Majors in political science, international relations, anthropology, and non-Western history preferred (students currently enrolled in college will be considered)
  • Willingness to learn about and contribute towards cross-cultural dialogues
  • Ability to work independently and off site with guidance from a team of supervisors
