Gender, Sex, & Feminism in the UK

Location: London, UK

Program Type: Faculty-directed

Semester: Summer

This program is brought to you by the Center for Gender in Global Context (GenCen) in collaboration with academic faculty from the UK. The program will be delivered by Dr Lucy Thompson, who is a feminist psychologist from the UK but now based in Lansing, Michigan. In the program, students will experience London as a global site of power and knowledge. Together, we will examine London as a place of great diversity, but also as a place of great inequality. Learning activities will combine traditional lectures and tutorials with on-site learning, guest lectures from UK-based feminist academics, walks, tours, and trips further afield. Our on-site learning activities will take place at locations such as the Natural History Museum, Houses of Parliament, Tate Modern, and the British Library. To celebrate international Pride month, we will also make a trip to Soho Pride. We will also take a day trip to the North of England to visit Feminist Archive North – a large archive of materials from British feminist movements based at the University of Leeds.

Program fees also include travel and attendance for the British Psychological Society’s prestigious Psychology of Women Section conference in Windsor. This conference brings together feminist psychologists from around the globe to present research on topics such as women’s health, sexualities, gendered violence, and feminist research methods. The conference creates a supportive and energizing space to build lasting feminist connections. More details can be found via the Psychology of Women Section twitter account and #powsconf hashtag.

This program offers the opportunity to engage in unique learning opportunities, and develop perspectives and connections not ordinarily found in everyday academic life. The program content fulfills significant portions of the requirements for the minor and major in Gender and Women’s Studies, as well as the minor in LGBTQ & Sexuality Studies, but is also designed to expand your world far beyond academia. There are numerous scholarships available, including one scholarship sponsored by the GenCen for students who are enrolled in either of the minors or the major supported by the Center. If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact Patrick Arnold ( or Lucy ( Lucy can also answer any questions about visiting, navigating, and making the most of London, having lived there herself.
