New York City: Fashion, Culture & Design Thinking

Location: New York City, New York

Semester: Spring/May 2023 (tentative)

This week-long study away program will take place in New York City. Students will earn 3 credits while focusing on networking and creative career paths in the fashion design industry. The goal of this the program is to introduce students to the design culture of the industry and create opportunities to network with industry professionals and ATD alumni, and to experience the fast paced fashion industry in Manhattan in concert with the Innovation District in Brooklyn.

Behind the scenes tours and visits will give students the opportunity to see design studios and fashion incubators to get a sense of daily work life in these creative spaces and to converse with alumni and other professionals.

This intensive experience will include visits to locations such as:

  • Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • Broadway Show
  • Times Square
  • Garment (Fashion) District
  • Mood Fabrics
  • Bryant Park
  • Alumni Networking Events

Dates: TBD (approx. 1 week in May 2023) 

Application Deadline: Program is not open to applications; Please check back in fall 2021. If program is confirmed to run, the application deadline will be February 1. Note that applications will not be reviewed until after the deadline. 

Courses: Students will earn 3 credits of ATD 491A 

Housing: Freehand New York (shared rooms) in Manhattan (tentative)

Eligibility: Students must be in good academic standing. The program is open to students of all majors and all levels of artistic experience.  Preference will be given to ATD majors. COVID-19 vaccination is required in order to participate.

Estimated Program Fee: TBD

Program fee does not include MSU tuition, roundtrip flight, additional meals, and personal spending money. Tuition costs vary depending on class standing, resident/non-resident status, etc. Visit MSU Student Accounts for information on tuition rates.  Students must take a total of 6 credits over the course of the summer 1 and 2 terms in order to be eligible for financial aid, student loans, etc.

Applicants who have a major within the College of Arts & Letters are eligible to apply for the CAL Study Away Scholarship. Visit for more information or to apply.
