Employment Opportunity: Instructor
Arts & Scraps reimagines recycled industrial materials to inspire people of all ages to think, create and learn.

Hours per week: Hours variable. Programs are posted when groups/schools contract them and our instructors choose the programs they want. Spring is busy, summer is busiest season, slower in fall and winter. Weekend hours are required. Must be able to work four programs a month.

Compensation: $12 per hour; after 1 year, 1 week of earned paid vacation and a 3% match to a 403B

Our instructors are the heart of our staff. They take our educational kits and lessons into the public; to schools, community groups, churches, etc. They are responsible for representing us and making sure our programs stay on mission and are fun.

Job description:

  • Teach curriculum (teaching points provided) using the creative process, facilitate the experience of developing and building ideas (not creating art) at locations in the metro area with a focus on Detroit. Please check our website for program content.
  • Lead programming during the school day, after school and on weekends
  • Drive the ScrapMobile (our 26′ bus; Chauffer’s License needed)
  • Invite and interact with families at creative tables in public and private events
  • May use personal vehicle at times (w/mileage reimbursement)
  • Welcome, orient and interact with volunteers at public and private events
  • Promote Arts & Scraps to the community
  • Responsible for paperwork and evaluations

Job Requirements; must be able to:

Safely drive the 26’ ScrapMobile, experience with large vehicles preferred. (If you do not have Chauffer’s License, we will reimburse you for the test)

Paid experience with groups of children, formal education or certification preferred

Responsible, must be timely

Understand that Arts & Scraps provides core curriculum experiences for children to think, create and learn by exploring their unique ideas. We do not teach children how to “make art”.

Lift 25 pounds

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated skill in Microsoft Excel and Word, able to learn additional computer programs
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Team player with great problem solving skills.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that includes occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have access to an automobile during normal working hours
