The City of East Lansing, Mich., a residential community of 47,741 people and home to Michigan State University, is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist.
This position reports to the Communications Administrator and will be responsible for a variety of external and internal communications for the City, including the creation and posting of written content for the City’s website, online and print newsletters, social media, news releases and more. This position will also be responsible for attending regular evening meetings of the East Lansing City Council and providing written coverage of those meetings for e-publications. Additionally, this position will assist with special communication campaigns and public relations and media strategies.

Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, public relations, advertising/marketing or a related degree is required. Four or more years of experience working in a communications field is preferred.
Qualifications include strong writing skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar), knowledge of AP Style, familiarity with web content management systems, familiarity with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), the ability to be a self-starter, strong interpersonal skills and a desire to communicate public policy and local government news to a diverse audience. Video production and editing skills are also preferred, but not required.

Additionally, to perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to maintain a physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time, general manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision and speech required
