Where you interned at: Rosenberg Perry & Associates LLC (Criminal Defense Law Firm), Mount Holly, NJ

What was your internship title and role/responsibilities?
My responsibilities as a Summer Legal Intern with Rosenberg Perry & Associates LLC included a variety of basic office tasks, such as answering phones, doing basic filing, and making copies, but also included more challenging legal tasks like legal research, drafting witness questions, and creating fact summaries for the attorneys and their cases.

How did you obtain your internship? What resources did you utilize to secure your internship?
I called around a bunch of local law firms in the South Jersey area and asked if there were any work opportunities for undergraduates at their firm. A couple firms asked me to send over my resume, including Rosenberg Perry & Associates. After sending my resume, I got an interview with the two partners, Dan and Rob, and a week after my interview I was offered the job!

What did your daily routine include?
My daily routine changed each day. Some days I would attend court appearances with the attorneys, other days I would be the receptionist answering phone calls and speaking with clients, and other days I would be assisting the paralegals with reviewing evidence and other case preparation. My routine mostly depended on what cases the firm was working on that week, and the cases varied.

Your favorite experience from the internship?
My favorite experience was when I attended court with one of the partners, Rob. He specializes in Superior Court criminal litigation and handles the cases with the most serious offenses. I enjoyed watching him argue in restraining order hearings, arraignments, detention hearings, and many more.

What was your least favorite part of the internship?
My least favorite part about my internship was having to make so many copies. I never knew how much printing and copying would be necessary in the legal field. Plus, the copier always jammed and gave me a problem so I never looked forward to making copies.

What skills did you learn and/or build upon during your internship?
This internship allowed me to improve my verbal and written communication skills. I further honed my organization and multitasking abilities due to the hectic and fast paced environment of a law firm. A new skill I learned was how to do legal research, which will certainly come in handy later in my career.

What did you learn about the industry or your career path as a result of the internship? What are your future plans?
My experience as an intern confirmed my interest of going into criminal law. I genuinely enjoyed my experience and everyone I got to connect with throughout my internship. I plan to pursue a career in criminal law, but I’m still not sure which side I want to be on (prosecution or defense).

What advice do you have for other students seeking out internship opportunities?
Put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to submit an application or make a phone call to see if there’s an opportunity for you!
