What was your internship title and role/responsibilities?
As a Marketing, UX/UI, and Web Development Intern at Spectrum Health in Dublin, Ireland, I supported daily marketing and website activities, including collaborating on social media, content, and marketing strategies. My responsibilities encompassed website updates, editing, and improvement efforts as part of a consolidation project, as well as UX/UI programming and design tasks. I contributed to the end-to-end process by defining patient journeys and identifying pain points. Additionally, I designed printable materials for clinics, proofread blogs, created infographics, and edited videos, ensuring SEO considerations were met when publishing content online. My role also involved crafting engaging captions, imagery, and video content, managing relationships with the clinical team and third parties, conducting competitor analysis, and addressing various ad-hoc and administrative needs as they arose.
How did you obtain your internship? What resources did you utilize to secure your internship?
I obtained my internship through applying through MSU’s internship abroad program in Dublin and then was placed at my internship through Connect 123.
What did your daily routine include?
My daily routine mainly consisted of either commuting to the office or working from home if it was a Monday or a Friday. I would have a couple of weekly check-ins with my team and keep tabs on whether there were any new requests for the marketing team from any other parts of the company. Mainly, I focused on making social media content for the company and assisting with migrating content over to the new website that we were building.
Your favorite experience from the internship?
I think the best moments for me were the interactions that I had in the office. Being able to talk to everyone about the differences between cultures and their advice for me was extremely helpful and appreciated.
What was your least favorite part of the internship?
I think the commute was definitely the toughest part of the internship. Having to rely on public transportation and possibly missing my second bus could mean that I got to work 30 minutes late.
What skills did you learn and/or build upon during your internship?
I learned skills surrounding social media as that was not something I have had as much professional experience with, and I built upon my skills with WordPress and Excel.
What did you learn about the industry or your career path as a result of the internship? What are your future plans?
The main thing I learned about my career path as a result of this internship is that I prefer the more behind-the-scenes website side of things compared to a social media/ content position.
What advice do you have for other students seeking out internship opportunities?
I’d just say to put yourself out there and volunteer for new experiences even if you don’t think you’re qualified for them. Internships are for you to learn!
