Since the abolition of apartheid and the shift to a multi-racial democracy in 1994, South Africa has experienced rapid transformations touching on all aspects of its society and economy. The end of the legally-enforced racial inequalities of apartheid has opened a complex array of opportunities for all South Africans, and a host of challenges stemming from the legacies of that history. Cape Town is rivaled only by Johannesburg as a center of South African culture, economic activity, media, and law, and is the home of a vast array of non-governmental organizations responding to the challenges of poverty, lingering inequality, economic development, public health, housing, conflict resolution, the empowerment of women, environmental sustainability resettlement of immigrants and refugees, and the like.
