At my internship, I was given the title law clerk. My main responsibilities were to check voicemails, accept new clients, attend court hearings and client meetings, and proofread briefs before court. My daily routine would include me waking up and calling the office’s voicemail to check for new calls. Throughout the day I would check the phones periodically, and just sit in on court hearings for different cases. Sometimes up to three cases a day.

I obtained my internship by calling the office and leaving a voicemail. After about 10 minutes Alexandria Taylor gave me a call back and welcomed me with open arms to the team.

My favorite part of the internship was building a bond with Miss Taylor. She reminds me of myself because we went through similar struggles. It was also amazing because I was able to work with a successful black woman in the career field I am pursuing. My least favorite part about my internship was that everything was virtual. I like to converse with people face to face and not via zoom. However, the entire experience was great because I was able to stay at home with my infant.

One thing I learn about the industry of my career path is that there are so many different parts of law to explore. I knew there were different types, but I was able to explore and expand my horizon in the types of law I was interested in. My future plans are to take a year off from school then attend law school at University of Detroit Mercy.

While working at Taylor Law, I was able to build on my communication skills. I learned to ask more question if I don’t understand something and don’t be afraid to give an opinion because someone else in the room may be thinking the same thing.

The advice I would give other students seeking out internship opportunities would be to start looking early. You don’t want to be struggling to find a internship at the last minute then end up stuck somewhere you are interested with.
