What was your internship title and role/responsibilities?
As a Marketing and Sales Intern, I collaborated with the business development team to streamline operations and support cross-functional initiatives. I contributed by drafting and revising marketing and sales collateral, as well as editing and rewriting much of the company’s website content. My role also included conducting mass data cleanup, in addition to creating reports, dashboards, and tools to better support sales representatives.
How did you obtain your internship? What resources did you utilize to secure your internship?
I utilized connections to find places that might be a good fit for me as an intern and took steps to set up meetings and interviews. I found that Healthrise seemed like an amazing opportunity and a great fit for me!
What did your daily routine include?
Typically, each day, I would sit in on anywhere from 3-8 meetings with various stakeholders, sometimes even including the Executive Leadership Team, in which I listened, took notes, and shared my perspectives and ideas. Most days, there was a new project on my desk – whether it was updating a spreadsheet, doing extensive research on a potential client, doing a mass transfer of records in our CRM, or any other task someone felt I could be helpful with. I constantly had something new to work on and I loved how dynamic and real my work was.
Your favorite experience from the internship?
My favorite experience from the internship was probably when I took the project of improving our website in my free time without specific instruction to do so. I then presented my 8-page long document of copy edits to the marketing director and she was extremely impressed and immediately implemented 95% of my edits. Looking at our company website and seeing things I’d written is still super exciting for me.
What was your least favorite part of the internship?
My least favorite part of the internship was probably just how far away it was. Commuting from East Lansing to Farmington Hills 5 days a week was no joke.
What skills did you learn and/or build upon during your internship?
I gained a really strong proficiency in Salesforce, where I’m hoping to gain an official admin certification in upcoming months. I also gained experience in making cold calls and life as an inside sales rep near the start of my internship. My skills in Excel grew as well. I also learned how to use other tools like WordPress and ZoomInfo.
What did you learn about the industry or your career path as a result of the internship? What are your future plans?
I learned a ton about the Healthcare industry in my internship, which I really knew nothing about before. I was very unsure of my career path before the internship, and it made me realize how much I enjoy working with data and numbers, whereas I previously thought I would excel more in a creative role. I have a much clearer view of what I want to do with my life and feel like I have a lot of potential to expand in ways I wouldn’t have expected without this internship.
What advice do you have for other students seeking out internship opportunities?
I think making connections and utilizing them is super important. I applied to hundreds of positions through job-search platforms and had no luck, but by utilizing connections I was able to find opportunities much quicker. Connect with as many people as possible and don’t be embarrassed or afraid to ask people for help.
