What was your internship title and role/responsibilities?
I was a legal intern. I would help draft court documents as well as submitting them to be officially filed with the court. I also would mail these documents to the property owners.
How did you obtain your internship? What resources did you utilize to secure your internship?
My mom works in the compliance department, so she was able to connect me with some of the attorneys and I reached out to see if they would need any help.
What did your daily routine include?
I would come in and then immediately look at my list of things to do that I made myself in the day prior and then basically just go through the motions of helping out the attorneys with anything.
Your favorite experience from the internship?
I really enjoyed going to court once a month to see how the hearings worked. It was really interesting for me.
What was your least favorite part of the internship?
Probably the lack of moving around, I sat at my desk for basically the whole day.
What skills did you learn and/or build upon during your internship?
I think I built my professional skills really well because I had never had an internship before or really worked any real job in an office, so that was really beneficial for me.
What did you learn about the industry or your career path as a result of the internship? What are your future plans?
Honestly it wasn’t as interesting as I thought the day to day jobs of an attorney are, but now I’m motivated to get another job at a different type of firm so that I can get a taste of more.
What advice do you have for other students seeking out internship opportunities?
I think that since it is getting increasingly more difficult every year that the most beneficial thing you can do is to cold call/ email types of companies that you want to work for/have an internship with. A lot of the time they won’t even post a job, but if you reach out they’ll want you.
