Hometown: Korea
Major and class standing: Graphic Design, Senior
Where you interned: Ivy House, Brooklyn, New York
What was your internship title and role/responsibilities?
As an art director at Ivy House in Brooklyn, NY, most of my work was making promotional flyers to let people know about the studio and the events there such as free music events, and markets to name a few. I also took some videos and pictures of the studio and some events there, and then made a short video with the videos that I took during the internship.
How did you obtain your internship? What resources did you utilize to secure your internship?
I heard about the internship in NY from an academic advisor’s email. After reading it, I applied for an internship in the NY program.
What did your daily routine include?
My workday was not fixed, so it was different every week, except on Mondays and Sundays. Mondays were my regular day off since my employer did not open the studio every Monday, and Sundays were my regular workdays. Aside from that, I stuck to my flexible weekly schedule. On Sundays, my employer informed me of my workdays and work hours.
Your favorite experience from the internship?
My favorite experience was meeting a good employer. When I felt that I had no ideas, she showed me some samples to inspire me. These really helped me to come up with new ideas. Also, she is an open-minded person, who likes different techniques and she told me that she likes to see different artistic methods that people have. Another one is that I learned how a workplace goes on, which I did not learn at MSU.
What was your least favorite part of the internship?
I did not have a bad part of the internship since I really enjoyed the work I did at the studio and with my employer. She was a nice person. However, my least favorite part is that it’s difficult to find the studio when it’s closed, as there is no logo or signboard indicating its location.
What skills did you learn and/or build upon during your internship?
I learned about the technique of taking videos of an event. I usually film the performers during music events, as they are the main focus. However, I’ve discovered that I can add variety to my videos by capturing the same person from different angles. I learned about exploring multiple angles by taking some videos.
What did you learn about the industry or your career path as a result of the internship? What are your future plans?
My future plan is to become a designer including a graphic designer, an art director, a package designer, a print designer, an illustrator, and so on.
